The architecture, environment: The postcard depicts a view of the famous shopping street in Nakamise, Asakusa in the 1900s, which is during the Meiji Restoration. The shopping stores are right next to each other, selling a wide variety of things: sweet treats, calligraphy, souvenirs, etc. The first shop on the right seems to sell omamori, lucky charms, for people who want to assess their luck. The shop’s architecture is ancient, red-bricked, and decorated by lamps on top of the rood, which transmits a uniform and traditional vibe. At the end of the street lies a big, formal red gate with a curved roof, which I assume might be of an essential religious temple, Above the shops stand a line of electric poles that provide electricity for the area. The historical architecture and the presence of electricity portrayed in the postcard illustrate the coexistence of tradition and modernity in the shopping district of Asakusa during the Meiji Period.
