I say this as the hotel is placed in what look like clouds, suggesting that time spent there is a peaceful escape, and below the hotel is what looks like a cherry tree in full bloom. As we’ve learned from lecture, both the Imperial Hotel and cherry trees are recognizable symbols of Tokyo and Japan that the country is proud of; they appear to be on full display in this postcard to attract tourism and as a form of nationalism. Annotation 2 Throughout the class, we’ve learned that even when changes occur in Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan, great care is taken to keep tradition — or at least what is described as tradition — alive. This postcard represents this well as it includes both a photograph (of the Imperial Hotel), a relatively newer art form, as well as painted artwork (of a cherry tree), which is an older art form. The painting of the cherry tree brings to mind pictures of the floating world, which as we learned in lecture was popular art during the Tokugawa period that focused on beautiful subjects such as women, landscapes, plants, and so on. Annotation 3 While I do strongly believe this postcard is seeking to portray Tokyo and Japan in a positive light, there are some negative associations that quickly come to mind upon analyzing it. What I described as likely being clouds could instead be seen as smoke, bringing to mind the many fires that have devastated Tokyo in the past or the pollution that later came with modernization.
