<text>1. This is a postcard of Sakurada-mon or Sakurada Gate in Tokyo, the fact that the means of transportation pictured here are carriages and horses rather than palanquins dates the postcard to the 20th Century. Sakurada-mon is one of the main gates of the Tokyo Imperial Palace (Kōkyo)- which is located on the former site of the Edo Castle- the gate is made up of Japanese hidden roofs and strong stone walls to keep the Palace secure.

2. The gate was originally built in the during the Kanei Era (1624 to 1644) and reconstructed in 1663; it was damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and repaired. Sakurada-mon was the site at which the Sakuradamon incident of 1860 (Bakumatsu period) took place: the assassination of the Bakufu’s Chief Minister Ii Naosuke by 17 Mito and 1 Satsuma samurai, paving the way for the Meiji Restoration of 1868.

3. This postcard documents the Sakurada-mon Incident of 1932: an assassination attempt against Emperor Showa (Hirohito) by Lee Bong Chang, a member of the Korean Patriotic Legion. Bong-Chang threw a hand grenade at the emperor's procession outside Sakurada-mon, causing negligible damages.
